Supporting Recovery from Trauma

Recovery from trauma can look like a lot of different things:

  • Less intense reactions to stress and trauma reminders
  • Improved ability to manage problems that arise
  • Increased confidence in their ability to cope
  • Increased understanding and acceptance of what happened
  • Re-engagement in daily routine, social networks or re-discovering enjoyable activities

A lot of the support a young person who has experienced trauma needs is probably things you are already doing in your relationship with them such as helping them feel safe and secure, modelling a positive relationship and coping strategies, being available and supportive when they need, encouraging their strengths and reducing their exposure to future risks.
